I’ve had tons of practice with helping raise my younger cousins. I thought I knew what to expect when I had my first child. I was wrong. When you become a mother for the first time, it’s scary, because it’s your first time bringing a mini you into this world. You are forever worried that you won’t raise them to be society’s expectation. After a few years, you realize how special this little human being is and that they don’t need to be what society expects. Every child is different, they’re not being raised by society, they’re being raised by you, you get to raise the baby as you see fit. I was so afraid of forgetting to feed my son, that I stayed awake for a very long time, I didn’t want anyone else to have that bond with him. I fed him, I changed him, I bathed him, I taught him that it’s ok to be different. My son was 9 months when I got pregnant with my daughter. My daughter came into this world very ill. I was told I needed to abort her, I couldn’t do such a thing. You know what, I’m so glad I didn’t. My daughter has taught me many things. She has taught me patience, I thought I had patience with my son… no I was oh so wrong.
Being the mother of an ill child has brought me more joy than anything. I was told she wouldn’t survive to be 1 yrs old. She’s going to be 9 this coming spring. When I got pregnant with my daughter I never expected that having an ill child could be so damn fun, frustrating, and courageous. People compliment my parenting of both of my kids. They say my kids are so polite and calm. I taught my kids to be respectful to everyone they meet, yes even the hateful people. They both go to school eager to learn, they both love being around people, and the best part is they love everyone they meet. I’ve raised them to know about the ugliness around the world, I don’t sugar coat anything with them tell them how things are. I want my kids to know how the world is before they are let out into the world themselves. We watch the news every morning before school has discussions about what the news is telling us. I love them so much, I wouldn’t change them for anything in the world.
